How important is ISO9001 for railway software company?

For Relesoft getting approved and official certificate for our quality management system was a big issue. There have been quite a big work to systematic process development process in building our baseline of work to be aligned with ISO9001 and all our software development to follow CENELEC (EN50126, EN50128 and EN50129). It is good that this has not been only on our management´s shoulders but we are having excellent software teams being able to form and follow processes accordingly. Relesoft´s quality management system is scoped around our software development. This is our most critical process and we live by doing good software and focus to improve quality everyday. Why ISO9001 is so important for railway software company? There are two main reasons:

1) The requirement for being aligned with CENELEC is that organisation has certified quality management system. If you do not have, your software work/solution/system is not accepted to be used in safety critical (SIL) railway environment in safety critical role. This leads to situation that every serious software company in the industry has to have ISO9001.

2) The second big reason is acceptance for the industry. Based on our experience large railway companies need their partners to have certain level of reliability and credibility. ISO9001 is like a stamp for us that we are continously focusing in improving our quality and independent auditor have evaluated us. Then it is easier to trust that younger and smaller companies are operating based on internationally accepted terms.
